At the 1st Train the Trainer meeting for Latin America held last week, 28 therapists and physicians from 6 countries became certified trainers for Thera-Band Academy. The meeting, held January 26-28, was hosted by the Thera-Band dealer, Equipos Interferenciales in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The intensive, 3-day training included the scientific and clinical application of elastic resistance, exercise balls, and progressive balance training. The attendees also learned how to use the Thera-Band Rehab and Wellness Station. Each instructor had to pass a written examination and complete an oral presentation of an exercise using Thera-Band products. Argentina, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela were represented. You can see photos of the training and some of their exercise presentations on our Facebook page.

The Thera-Band Academy supports 220 instructors from 45 countries around the world. Each presents professional workshops in their country using Thera-Band products.  The instructors work with their local dealers to provide evidence-based hands-on workshops for healthcare and fitness professionals. The Academy Supports Certified Exercise Experts for Aging Adults Program

The Section on Geriatrics APTA is offering a 3 course series leading to becoming a “Certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults“. The Academy has supported the geriatric physical therapy training program for several years with Thera-Band products including resistance bands, Stability Trainers and FlexBars. Physical therapists who complete the program will demonstrate expert clinical decision-making skills in (1) examination of aging adults, (2) designing and applying an effective exercise prescription, and (3) measuring the effectiveness and reflecting on the current evidence of exercise for all aging adults. The process to attain the credential of “Certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults” is to complete formal didactic education and to participate in supervised and mentored skills development, home-based reflection, practical testing, and critical thinking. Three courses of two days each address evidence-based examination and different and increasingly complex aspects of exercise design and delivery. The three courses are designed to build on each other; however, Courses 1 and 2 can be taken out of sequence. Course 1 is Introduction and Examinati on (Tests and Measures); Course 2 is Exercise Prescription and Consensus Guidelines; and Course 3 is Special Populations, Complementary Exercises, Motivation, Drug and Nutritional Considerations, and Marketing. Thera-Band Academy Helps Raise Research Funds for Foundation for Physical Therapy

Akron, Ohio – May 10, 2010 – Partnering with several physical therapy and physical therapist assistant schools in the U.S., the Thera-Band Academy supported ten continuing education seminars entitled, Beyond Bands: Evidence-Based Progression of Elastic and Proprioceptive Exercises. The workshops were used as fundraisers for students, with most of the money being donated to the Miami-Marquette Challenge for the Foundation for Physical Therapy.

“The one-day workshop was developed to help support evidence-based practice with readily available equipment like resistance bands and exercise balls, while emphasizing immediate clinical applications based on the latest research from around the world,” stated Phil Page, PhD, PT, ATC, CSCS, director of clinical education and research for the Thera-Band Academy. “We are very happy to have helped raise over $20,000 through the schools. Our partner schools did a great job in providing both education and supporting research. Over 75% of the attendees noted that the workshop ‘exceeded’ their expectations, allowing us to believe that this was a win-win situation.”

Page continued, “In addition, the program provided exposure for the Thera-Band Academy and what we do. The Academy’s web site, www.Thera-BandAcademy.com, connects healthcare professionals and consumers to the ever growing body of research, protocols and exercise.”
