The popular Tyler Twist exercise for tennis elbow with the FlexBar was recently featured in a story on National Public Radio (NPR). Reporter Allison Aubrey featured physical therapist Barton Bishop at Sport and Spine Rehab in Rockville, Maryland instructing a patient in the exercise. In the interview, Dr. Bishop helped demonstrate the exercise with his patient, Larry Holzman, who is having a successful rehabilitation with the FlexBar exercise. Link to the story, “A Rubber Twist on Treating Tennis Elbow Pain” here. The webpage includes a link to a video demonstration featuring Holzman and Dr. Bishop. You can also listen to the interview from NPR here.
Researchers at the Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma (NISMAT) at LenoxHillHospitalin New Yorkpublished an article in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery showing that the Tyler Twist is effective at significantly reducing pain and increasing strength in patients with tennis elbow. Tim Tyler, president of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Sports Physical Therapy Section was the lead author of the study. The Thera-Band FlexBar was recently endorsed by the APTA.

Akron, OH (PRWEB) June 01, 2011. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has endorsed the Thera-Band® FlexBar®, a lightweight, easy to grip, portable resistance exerciser for rehabilitating and strengthening hands, wrists, forearms, shoulders and elbows. APTA’s endorsement is a designation that indicates to both physical therapy professionals and the world at large that the FlexBar qualities make the product a valuable tool for practitioners.
“The FlexBar is an amazing tool for the practitioner’s exercise toolbox. In addition to strengthening the hand and forearm, it’s used for oscillation exercises and soft tissue mobilization,” stated Phil Page, PT, PhD, ATC, FACSM, CSCS, Director of Clinical Education and Research for Performance Health.
“A study published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery using the FlexBar showed an 81% improvement in elbow pain and a 72% improvement in strength for tennis elbow patients,” continued Page. “This study has been seen world-wide and has helped countless people suffering from chronic tennis elbow.”

Last week, I asked you to rank your favorite Top Blog Post of 2010….and we had a tie! Not surprisingly, the posts about Tim Tyler’s FlexBar exercises for tennis elbow and golfers elbow were the top vote-getters from our readers. The “Tyler Twist” has helped hundreds of people with tennis elbow based on the numerous comments posted on the Internet, and his new “Reverse Tyler Twist” for golfers elbow looks to be as promising as Tim completes his clinical research on the exercise. Here are the links to those posts in case you missed them!

The “Tyler Twist” has gained quite a bit of attention since it was introduced last year at the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine meeting; but you probably already know that if you follow the Academy blog!
The novel exercise using the Thera-Band® FlexBar® for tennis elbow (i.e., “lateral epicondylosis”) was developed and researched by physical therapist Tim Tyler in New York. His results were recently published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. The exercise has also been very popular on YouTube, garnering nearly 200,000 views in about 18 months. The North American Journal of Sports Physical Therapy featured the exercise as a “clinical suggestion” for sports physical therapists, and Active Aging Today published an article describing the exercise for fitness experts working with older adults.
Feedback on the Internet has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly after its posting on the New York Times and in Readers Digest. People continue to post their quotes, comments, and reviews of the exercise. Here are a few from our blog:
- The Flexbar helped me recover by a good 80-90% within as little time as a week. I did the exercise everyday (3 sets) –MJC
- This worked SO MUCH BETTER than the exercises I got in physical therapy which were different wrist curls More >
