The Academy Supports Certified Exercise Experts for Aging Adults Program

The Section on Geriatrics APTA is offering a 3 course series leading to becoming a “Certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults“. The Academy has supported the geriatric physical therapy training program for several years with Thera-Band products including resistance bands, Stability Trainers and FlexBars. Physical therapists who complete the program will demonstrate expert clinical decision-making skills in (1) examination of aging adults, (2) designing and applying an effective exercise prescription, and (3) measuring the effectiveness and reflecting on the current evidence of exercise for all aging adults. The process to attain the credential of “Certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults” is to complete formal didactic education and to participate in supervised and mentored skills development, home-based reflection, practical testing, and critical thinking. Three courses of two days each address evidence-based examination and different and increasingly complex aspects of exercise design and delivery. They have always been a source of great ideas to improve outcomes. The original idea behind the Thera-Band resistance band was actually brought to us by two physical therapists back in 1975. They were using our bulk dental dam product to enhance the effectiveness of their patients’ rehabilitation programs and wanted us to develop additional resistance levels,” stated Ethan Pochman, Director of Marketing and Clinical Solutions.

Body-Balancing Workout for Pain-Free JointsWhen it comes to our muscles, stronger is better, right? Not necessarily. When one muscle is too strong compared to another, it creates an imbalance that leaves our joints vulnerable to inflammation, injury and pain.
According to physical therapist and certified athletic trainer Phil Page, PhD, PT, coauthor of Assessment and Treatment of Muscle Imbalance, as we age, certain muscles typically become overstretched, which weakens them… while certain other muscles tend to shorten, becoming strong but tight. Scientists aren’t sure why this happens (though poor posture is a likely factor), but they do know that it causes abnormal wear and tear on joints.
