Biofreeze blood flow reduction study published in Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine

Biofreeze® topical analgesic has been shown to provide pain relief in numerous patients, including those with back and neck pain. For almost 20 years, patients and clinicians have relied on its “cryotherapy” effects to manage the pain of arthritis, sprains and strains. Cryotherapy with ice is known to quickly decrease blood flow and is often used for immediate application following an acute injury, or to reduce joint pain after strenuous activity. Ice applications reduce the metabolic demand on injured tissues and help reduce pain. Unfortunately, little has been known about the specific mechanism of action of Biofreeze’s cryotherapy effects.
For those of you who follow our blog, you’ll recall Dr. Robert Topp and his research team at the University of Louisville have done extensive studies on the effects of Biofreeze and ice on blood flow. One of their studies was recently published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine. In their study, the researchers applied either ice or Biofreeze gel to the forearms of 12 healthy subjects. New Article in NAJSPT on Tyler Twist

I’m proud to announce that the North American Journal of Sports Physical Therapy has just published my review paper on the “Tyler Twist” outcome study. The Tyler et al. study was just published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. Download my review article here (requires free registration to the Academy). Welcome New Academy Faculty in India

Dr. Phil Page, Director of Reseach and Education for Thera-Band Academy, recently trained 18 physical and occupational therapists as new faculty in the Thera-Band Academy. The trainers went through intensive didactic and hands-on training in New Delhi in order to teach the course, “Bands, Balls & Balance“, which is now taught by over 150 trained instructors in 36 countries! The “BBB” workshop helps rehabilitation and exericse professionals learn how to apply scientific principles to create evidence-based programs using Thera-Band products.
A list of all Thera-Band Academy instructors is available on the Academy website. Faculty experience is designated by the progressive color levels in the Thera-Band system: new instructors are green-level, while expert instructors are gold-level. These instructors work with Thera-Band distributors in their countries to provide professional workshops. The Academy website also offers a list of available workshops around the world.
How to Fix a Bad Tennis Shoulder

Thera-Band® Academy research advisory committee (TRAC) member, Todd Ellenbecker DPT was recently featured in an article in the New York Times entitled, How to Fix a Bad Tennis Shoulder. In the article, he provides specific exercises using Thera-Band resistance. Todd serves as Director of Sports Medicine for the ATP tour, and is a clinical director and National research director for Physiotherapy Associates in Scottsdale, Arizona.
